Cinefantastique 50th Anniversary

Panel celebration and reception for the 50th anniversary of Cinefantastique!

Description

Creature Features is proud to present an event celebrating the golden anniversary of one of the finest genre publications, CINEFANTASTIQUE!

In 1967, Chicago native Frederick S. Clarke published the first modestly mimeographed copy of CINEFANTASTIQUE, introducing a generation of FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND readers to a more sophisticated take on their favorite films. Later christened “The Magazine With a Sense of Wonder,” in 1970 the scrappy zine morphed into a slicker publication that changeed the face of genre journalism with its potent mix of critical reviews, up-to-date film & TV coverage, and glorious retrospectives of the classics.  Clarke’s brash editorial approach often courted controversy, ruffling the feathers of Hollywood’s genre elite with prickly reviews and blockbuster plot spoilers.

During its first three decades, Clarke armed himself with a talented team of budding young journalists whose careers would spawn an entire industry of groundbreaking visionaries, including Tim Lucas of VIDEO WATCHDOG, Don Shay of CINEFEX, writer/director Mick Garris (THE STAND), screenwriter David J. Schow (THE CROW), Paul Sammon (author of FUTURE NOIR: THE MAKING OF BLADE RUNNER, and Stephen Rebello (author of ALFRED HITCHOCK AND THE MAKING OF PSYCHO).

Though Clarke died tragically by his own hand in October, 2000, the magazine left an indelible mark that remains unsurpassed fifty years after its humble birth in the attic of his mother’s house.

With Cinefantastique’s brand of minute scrutiny and knowledgeable coverage having been replaced by armchair bloggers and dime-a-dozen podcasts, Creature Features toasts the magazine’s 50th anniversary with an unprecedented reunion panel featuring many key contributors, including editor Steve Biodrowski, Stephen Rebello (author of ALFRED HITCHCOCK AND THE MAKING OF PSYCHO), Don Shay, author/journalist Jeff Bond, Steve Rubin (THE TWILIGHT ZONE ENCYCLOPEDIA), Paul Sammon (author of FUTURE NOIR: THE MAKING OF BLADE RUNNER, Director Sam Irvin, former managing editor and art director Michael Kaplan, writer/producer/director Ted Newsom, Preston Neal Jones (author of HEAVEN & HELL TO PLAY WITH: THE FILMING THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER), and more to be announced.

This presentation will be filled with fond remembrances and assorted surprises, so please join us as we celebrate the durable institution of CFQ and its impact on the world of fantastic cinema.

The event will take place on Sunday, December 10th at 2pm.

Admission is $12 and includes reception following the Q&A.
